DELCOing a Meyers Manx Buggy (VW 1800)

Post by Rock_Lobster »

Here's a friend's buggy which I helped convert to DELCO injection. It had a single downdraft carby before. I kept telling him he should fuel inject it.
His daughter had an old Nissan Pulsar she didn't want anymore. I suggested to him that he had most of the parts he needed to convert to EFI right there.
This is 6 months later.

The owner made the intake, from the throttle body, to the existing lower cast runner attatchment point.

He also made the injector bungs, and had them welded to the existing runners. The Pulsar fuel rail was also cut and shut.

Another view of the intake. This shows the distributer the best, as I forgot to take a photo of it.
The Pulsar dizzy has had the outer lower housing lathed down to the same diameter as a VW dizzy. That's it.
The Pulsar (Astra/ Camira) dizzy has the same male interlock part as the VW dizzy at the bottom of the inner shaft.
Almost as if it's made for it.
If you can't be a good example, be a horrible warning.

VSS source, placed inline with the speedo cable. Found this online from the UK, from a mob who has a kit to install Subaru engines into VW Beetles.

VSS converter box I made, to convert the +ve square wave speed pulse to "pull down" the VSS pin in the Delco ECU, as is required.

Temperature sensor. Screwed into a block of aluminium, which is bolted to the LH head.

Now, at the moment, the buggy runs the standard Nissan Pulsar Memcal. The car runs like a champion.
The owner took it to a VW show, and spent the whole day showing other owners the system.
He said he could have had four firm orders if he wanted to install any more.
His "party trick" is to stand outside the buggy, lean in and turn the key, and the buggy just starts and purrs.

I have a NVRAM modded ECU (OSE 12P) ready to go in, and have transferred the maps I could find over.
Then need to check that the PPK is right, then see what further tuning is required.
Though according to the owner, it already uses less fuel than before, has more power and doesn't ping.

He now thinks this EFI stuff is easy !

They look like metal punch letters that have been heated ??

Love the conversion!! I am netted to know wat sort of numbers the coolant sensor sees on an air cooled motor!!

I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.

I have urged so many fellow veedubbers to try out a delco conversion but being such stubborn bunch hardly anyone want to a word of it, and if they do its MS, haltec or nothing lol.

glad someone made a good conversion on their vw, maybe others will follow.

looks good

I am an electrical technician in an open cut mine.
We have a Roland EGX-350 desktop engraver, for doing our labels at work.
It also is used to engrave single sided circuit boards.
Turned out OK I thought.

So am I. When we put in the realtime modded ECU, will be interesting to see.
