Its a brand of interface chip. Originally by elm electronics. But the top end 'elm 327' chip first release was cloned and now the majority of the interfaces are hacked v1.0 devices with the bugs the 1.0 release had but with the version numbers changed to whatever the cloners need to sell them. Whats more the elm is only the vehicle interface chip so implementation details and what type of usb or bluetooth interface was used varies. Essentially they are not all equal. Another shortcoming is lack of device speed and small buffer size. They do cover a lot of types of vehicle interface and so if you can live with the limitations they are a cheap way to perform some tasks. Now they have been improved and rebranded as STN chips which are a big improvement and are not cloned but so far most people think they just want an elm. Hopefully that begins to change. Obdlink interfaces are backward compatible to elm and use the stn chips.
