Thanks
Its a hardware limitation. Changing dwell times to skip spark events does not happen instantly as there is no direct software control of some things in the '808. The later '424 PCM has direct control which is why 11P can have it.

and you've been up and down the codes of both of them how many times lol! :study: :comp:

Thanks for the info on MDI and RFI, guys.

It's ironic that the interference peaks from a GSM (2G) mobile are much worse than any police radio.

Also, I should comment that the heat and vibration under the bonnet are why ECU/PCM's are instead located within the cabin, life and reliability for a complex piece of electronics would be less than ideal under the bonnet.

Joe.

Its hard to find a car without the ecu mounted in the engine bay or on the engine these days!

On the engine? Good grief! Maybe they want it to fail (after the warranty period with any luck)?

Re: interfearance, Maybe gsm vs analog signal, but phones arnt pushing 100watts of power. And the radios do include data. But i do agree, probably dont _need_ rfi pms. But they do want their cars and radios to be as reliable as possible.

maybe the rfi pcm was to stop interference back into the radios more than radios interfering with the pcm

nah, its to keep the radio interference out the pcm better. Ive seen a holden where the indicator flashers buzz when a 25watt radio is keyed up because there is enough energy in the air at close range to charge the flasher can many 10s of times in a second. And Ive seen a 1st gen liberty where the engine stalls if you key up a 25watt radio at idle due to not being able to keep the RFI out. But also Ive seen a more modern 4th gen that is fine with 40watt near by.

There is a lot to take in to account with radio propagation and RFI. But the police are doing big power and usually have multiple radios on different bands. They're playing it safe and so they should. But of course the theory is never that simple. Antenna type/gain, antenna location, frequency and type of signal are all major parts to the story. Eg more gain means for effective power output but that's because the antenna has introduced the trade off of a flatter signal. More power goes out sideways where you need it, and less power in to the sky and ground. In this case a high gain roof mounted antenna will be doing more effective power sideways across the landscape toward the horizon and less of it will be going up in to the sky and down in to and around the cabin.

Another one for the list ...

OE : Original Equipment

Joe.

BTW, I've seen a little Nokia mobile push a 70V/m RF meter off the scale! To put that in perspective, we have an EMC test chamber where I work that has a 200W source, and that can only achieve up to about 45V/m.
