VZ/WL Fuel guage woes - SOLVED

Hi all,

Been tearing my hair out with this one.

In short I have a WL 5.7 that has been tuned with HP tuners that has a fuel guage that doesn't work correctly. It sometimes works backwards, sometimes just pinned on full. Currently I have drained the tank and added 20lt back in (which should read 1/4ish) and it reads full. This car underwent a big build and this is one of the leftover head aches.

Changes that effect the fuel guage -

PCM - was changed early on, was flashed with a stock file and tuned from there

PIM - has latest software

The engine is reporting 0.69v which is where the full reading is coming from. I have had the tank out and manually tested the sender output which is fine.

There are options in HPT to alter fuel guage setting but none seem to change the issue.

Anyone have any ideas?

There was a change around this time to reverse the fuel sender resistance so dash may not match the calibration.
Biggest change from VY to VZ was that in VY was wire direct from fuel sender to the dash. For VZ it was changed from sender to ecu that then sent information to the dash.
I doubt there would be a mismatch of software as VY was cable throttle body and VZ was drive by wire.

I would start with checking software level of the dash.

There was a firmware update for the VZ ECUs that was needed if pumping in the latest fuel calibration for the instrument cluster using Tech2win.

If the ECU isnt updated, you tend to get some weird fuel gauge movements, and the cluster will display errors on screen.

Thanks for the replys

Yoda - Agree, the hardware is correct

Tazzi - That's intesting, I get this error if I try to SPS the PCM -

What is also interesting is this random VIN that I see if I look at 'ECU data' when SPS'ing the IPC...

That could explain some of it, different tank in a Ute to sedan/wagon.
Although would have expected it be be just inaccurate rather than working sometimes and not others.

Try selecting a V6, it wont affect whats programmed in for the instrument cluster option since they are all the same.

You should get this for the programming option once you get through, I just looked up the calibration using: https://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web/

If you still get nothing, then they have not yet added the calibration to the SPS2 database.

Righto, went through the programming process again this morning, couldn't locate a V6 option for IPC.

Managed to brick the cluster shortly after that pic  knocked the USB cnnector.

Anyhow, found another blue plug cluster and it shows the same guage issue and it was from a V6

Righto, update time, been a rough day..

I bricked the original cluster after knocking the usb while SPS'ing, the USB port on my original CARDAQ M has broken off it's mount

Tazzi helped me out with his body software (thanks Taz ) which was the first time I've worked with it, fucken awesome gear! I managed to manipulate the guage and thought I was on the right track when I reversed the ohms, added fuel and no change
After a bit more research, it looks like possibly a VY fuel sender has been fitted... The tank is coming out again tomorrow and won't be going back in until the guage works.

Anyone got any ideas on unbricking the original cluster? I read the 24c04 chip, I flashed a bin from another cluster to it but no luck, still stuck on green screens and doesn't appear in any module presence checks, eg: can't SPS it because SPS can't see it same with Tazzi's tool.
